PRINTING ARTS in Syllabus
Printmaking is the process of making artworks by printing
normally on paper. Printmaking normally covers only the process of creating
prints that have an element of originality rather than just being a
photographic reproduction of a painting. The main techniques used in
printmaking are woodcut etching lithography and screenprinting. Woodcut is a
relief printing technique where the artist carves an image into a block of
wood. The raised areas of the carving are then inked and pressed onto paper
resulting in a print. This technique was famously used by German artist
Albrecht Durer in the 15th century. Etching is another relief printing
technique where the artist uses an acidic solution to 'bite' into a metal
plate. The raised areas of the plate are then inked and pressed onto paper
resulting in a print. This technique was popularized in the 17th century by
Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn Lithography.
