Ranil Wickremesinghe has announced that he will resign as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka "to ensure continuation of the government and safety of all citizens".
"To ensure the continuation of the Government including the safety of all citizens I accept the best recommendation of the Party Leaders today, to make way for an All-Party Government. To facilitate this I will resign as Prime Minister," he tweeted.
The decision came on a day when thousands of protesters stormed Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s residence in Colombo, demanding his government’s resignation. Ranil Wickremesinghe had summoned an emergency meeting with political party leaders to discuss the situation.
