The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) is a statutory body that regulates and standardizes teacher education in India. The NCTE was established in 1993 pursuant to the National Policy on Education (NPE) 1986 as a result of the National Council for Teacher Education Act 1993. The NCTE is headquartered in New Delhi.
The main functions of the NCTE are as follows:
To lay down standards for teacher education courses
To recognize teacher education institutions throughout the country
To monitor and evaluate the progress of teacher education institutions
To accredit teacher education courses
To take such steps as may be necessary to ensure coordination and integration of policy and planning with regard to teacher education
