The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is a national board that offers courses at the elementary secondary and senior secondary levels. It is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Human Resource Development Government of India. The institute was established in 1989 to provide an alternative to formal schooling.
The NIOS offers a diploma in Elementary Teacher Education (D.El.Ed.) for in-service untrained teachers working in primary/upper primary schools in various states of the country.
